Week 3 CFCC Wrap: Pretenders and Contenders

by: Sugar (September 21, 2016)

Week 3 CFCC is in the books and it once again that time of the contest when the contenders begin to distant themselves from the pretenders. Pretender #1. Florida State. The all-member consensus was 3 on the Seminoles, so dirty-dawgers were cautious, with 134 actually selecting Louisville. Despite the low confidence and about a third taking the Cardinals, we doubt anyone saw that beat-down coming. Pretender #2...Oklahoma. Despite having an incredible record as an underdog at home, Urban Meyer proved he is the real deal when it comes to big games, while Big Game Bob is just, well, Bob. After playing in the playoff in 2015, Oklahoma was eliminated, Sooner than later this year (sorry about that one!). Pretender #3, Notre Dame. Everyone dismissed Michigan State once again this year, except for Michigan State, as they eliminated the Fighting Irish...in South Bend. Pretender #4, Texas. Everyone was high on Texas after beating a (now obvious) overrated Notre Dame team. But, a late evening loss to California indicates that the Longhorns still have a way to go to be a real contender among the college football elite. Other possible pretenders...Michigan struggled before finally eliminating Colorado. And, at the risk of ire from the college football gods, Alabama looks vulnerable to us this year. It's probably NOT going out on a limb by predicting The Tide won't win another championship this year, but I'm going to do it anyhow. I will do this despite one of my favorite Twitter posts, "There is intense, and then there is Nick Saban".

Now that we are done with pretenders, let's take a look at some early season dirty-dawg contenders. Sam Lucci of Collierville, TN is our new overall leader after three weeks of play. This dirty-dawg veteran also had the top score for the week with an almost perfect 118 points on 14 wins. He succesfully nailed all of the upsets listed above and only missed his 1 confidence on Appalachian State. Sam has 246 points on a 32-13 record. Tom Fannin of Richmond, TX is in 2nd place with 224 points and dirty-dawg veteran Ken Drozd from Tucson, is in 3rd place with 218. These folks need to look over their shoulders where we find some dirty-dawg royalty lurking not too far down the standings. The 2014 dawg silver medalist, Aidan Binau (of the dirty-dawg Binau family dynasty), is in 5th place, while last year's bronze boner, Mike Zwier, is in 12th place, and the lovely, competitive Judy Vesper, who took home the bronze bone in 2007, is in 23rd. Mike Fuhs has the best record with 35 wins through three weeks. Cody Mize was the biggest mover for Week 3, up 219 places, while our buddy Homer Simpson was down 263.

The average score for Week 3 was 56 and the runner-up was dirty-dawg powerhouse, Linda Walters, who lives in the infamous tornado city of Xenia, Ohio. Linda had 106 points for the week, missing the Florida State and Notre Dame losses. On the group front, Bucknutz holds a narrow lead over The Border War Still Lives on in KC.

Tough match-ups await for Week 4. Florida takes its vaunted defense into Knoxville to face Tennessee, a team they have dominated since the Peyton Manning days, or so it seems, if that's not right. Georgia plays at Ole Miss, Wisconsin visits East Lansing, and Arkansas squares off with Texas A&M. Good luck with your Week 4 picks.

On the "did you know" front. Did you know you can verify that your picks, or any players picks for that matter, for a given week have been entered by pointing your browser to the Player Picks page or to any group listing. If a player's picks are in for the upcoming week, you will see a red check next to their name. No check, no picks. Enjoy the games this week!
