PFCC Week 1: Rarified "Error"by: The Cold Hard TruthBefore I talk about Week 1 of the NFL football and PFCC, I must first apologize. I have to bring up baseball for one brief moment. It’s not my favorite sport, but each year the story lines are simply great. This baseball season, I was focused in part on Ichiro Suzuki’s quest for 3000 hits…and yes, he did it. At almost 43 years old, the guy is currently batting .301, and as of the writing of this article, he now stands at 3025 hits. This year he eclipsed the 500 stolen base plateau as well, making all the other 40-plus year old men look slow and out of shape. Thank you Ichiro! Yet, it is another stat that I noticed recently that blew me away – even more than all his other accomplishments. Over the last three seasons, Ichiro has only committed one error. Yes, that’s right. He has only made one mistake. I don’t know when it happened? – I don’t know how it happened? – I’m not even sure if they just fabricated the error to make all of us all feel better about ourselves. To me, out of all his accomplishments, that is the one that impresses me most. When I look at the Dirty-Dawg PFCC this week, there’s not a single person who made just one mistake. Shawna Cokley from Raleigh, NC and Kent Prochazka from Pearland, TX both went 13-2 and let’s face it – that’s a really great week. Even though their scores earned them the #2 and #4 spots out of 309 competitors, those errors just keep piling up. Brady Cooper from Dallas, TX is our leader. He went 12-3 and scored 96 points. That is definitely the way to come out of the gates strong. However, let’s be honest Brady. If we want football to be better than baseball, we simply can’t have our leaders making…ugh…three mistakes. Of course, NFL players produced their own fair share of mistakes this past week as well. Terrance Williams of the Cowboys needs to know when it’s important to run out of bounds to stop the clock. Matthew Stafford yelled at his receivers twice for that same mistake on the Lions’ final drive. At least they ended up with enough time to kick a game-winning field goal. On Monday Night Football, we became aware of the huge blunder LA Ram fans made buying season tickets, and the injured Robert Griffin III needs to learn to not hit people when he’s running out of bounds. Hey, I even made a few mistakes myself. One was not being able to say no when it comes to fantasy football. My “four” teams went 2-2 this week, and I watched my star wide receiver Kennan Allen go down with a season-ending ACL tear. That was a really great pick on my part. Yep, we all are susceptible to being imperfect. Always remember that it’s how we cope with adversity, and how we learn from our mistakes, that allows us to become a success. That’s why the Dallas Cowboys never win and why Johnny Manziel is probably sacking groceries somewhere in College Station. …and it’s also why New England still looks like their winning selves even without Brady or Gronkowski. PFCC Week 1 is just the beginning of another great year of competition. For the 7 of you that scored in the negative this week. Yes, you did worse than not playing at all. But the good news is that if you play like Ichiro Suzuki from now on, you can still win this whole thing. You’ve got a real shot to win this! Oops…my mistake. |
