The 2017 Week 2 CFCC Wrap-up:

Best College Week 2 Ever; Contenders and Pretenders start to get Identified

By Shudda, Cudda, Wudda

The past several seasons have seen some excellent Week 1 Matchups, only to be followed by a lame Week 2, with lots of lopsided games. Not so in 2017 as we saw probably the best Week 2 slate of games ever, with four Top 25 matchups, and three of those games being Top 15 matchups. Unfortunately all four of these games were broadcast during Prime Time, making it difficult to fully appreciate the day. #6 USC and Sam Darnold made a statement in the LA Coliseum, drubbing #14 Stanford, 42-24 with over 300 yards both rushing and passing. Speaking of statements, Baker Mayfield made the off-the-field statement last week, but he and the #5 Oklahoma Sooners made a strong on-the-field statement by surging away from #2 Ohio State in the 4th Quarter in front of almost 110,000 at “The Shoe”. In the other two Prime Time Games, #3 Clemson’s defense terrorized #13 Auburn’s new quarterback with 11 sacks and won 14-6, and Georgia outlasted Notre Dame 20-19 in a back-and-forth 4th quarter in South Bend.

Certainly, Oklahoma over Ohio State was an upset, but there were a couple of other big surprises as well. Duke winning at home over Northwestern may have been considered a mild upset, but the 41-17 thrashing that Duke put on Northwestern, including 34 first downs, was a statement itself, with at least a few “experts” telling us to keep a watch on Northwestern in the Big 10 West. And for those of you who cruised through your picks by stamping a double digit confidence on Syracuse over Middle Tennessee State, and had not even bothered to check that score, YES, that why your score is so damn low this week. Syracuse still stinks and MTSU was happy to show us how bad. Congrats to the 4% of you who picked MTSU. And finally, Lamar Jackson (What Heisman jinx?) and Louisville, followed up their 500 yard performance in Week 1 against Purdue with a 700 yard performance in our opening Dirty Dawg game at North Carolina.

In Dirty Dawg play for the week, we had two players who scored in triple digits, Zach Sefcovic (101), Cleveland, OH, and Keith Sherburn (100), Rapid City, SD. Zach correctly picked the MTSU, Georgia, and Oklahoma upsets, and Keith picked Duke with an 11 confidence and got the Georgia and Oklahoma picks as well. The average score was a low 48 and we even had 10 players in negative territory.

Zach Sefcovic not only won for the week, he is now atop the overall Dirty Dawg CFCC Standings, 6 points ahead of Michael Orosco, Colorado Spring, CO, and 16 points ahead of Andrew Sniezak, Germantown, TN.

For Group Play, BoomerBacks surged from 4th place into 1st place, based partly on the Boomer Sooner victory. However, I will point out that 3 of the BoomerBacks did not back the Sooners this week--just sayin’... For second place, Dawgzilla bumped up one place from third.

For Week 3, we don’t have as many great matchups, with only two Top 25 games scheduled, and Hurricane Irma postponing one of them (#17 Miami at #11 Florida State). So, all eyes will be watching #3 Clemson visiting #14 Louisville. Let’s see how good Clemson’s defense really is, as they take on the vaunted Louisville Heisman attack. Good Luck everyone!
